PR Newswire, Business Wire or GlobeNewswire API? What a Press-Release Feed Misses
If you're searching for a PR Newswire API, a Business Wire API or a GlobeNewswire API, you probably want one thing: company news, delivered to your code the moment it happens.
Press-release wires are a reasonable place to look. They are also only part of the picture.
What a press-release wire API gives you
PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire are distribution services. A company writes a release, submits it to the wire, and the wire pushes it to media, terminals and websites.
That makes a wire feed a record of what companies chose to announce, in the words they chose, at the time they chose.
For a lot of products that is useful. Earnings announcements, product launches and partnerships usually travel this way, and a wire feed gets them to you.
We don't publish wire pricing here. Check each service's own site for what API access costs and how it's licensed.
Where a press release and the SEC filing diverge
A US public company's legal record sits in its SEC filings. A press release is communication, and a filing is disclosure.
The two often overlap. Companies regularly attach the release to an 8-K as an exhibit, so the same announcement shows up in both places.
They don't always match, though.
Plenty of filings never get a press release at all. An insider's Form 4 purchase, a fund's Form 13F position change, a Form D private placement and a Schedule 13D/A ownership update are all filings that a company has no reason to announce.
Those are often the signals a research tool or trading product cares about most.
A wire feed also carries things that were never filed, such as marketing announcements and softer news. Whether that is noise or signal depends on what you're building.
What Insighthread's News API does differently
Insighthread's News API starts from the filing, not the release.
When a US-listed company files with the SEC, Insighthread parses the document and produces a structured news event. Each item runs about 50 to 60 words, states facts only, and links straight to the filing it came from.
Items are available in under 90 seconds from the filing timestamp.
Every event is tagged with one of 33 event types across 11 groups, from Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate Earnings to Insider Trades, Shareholder Activism and FDA Approval/Rejections. You can filter on the type that matters to your product instead of parsing prose.
Because the pipeline only reads filed documents, nothing unfiled can get in. There are no rumors by construction.
The same idea runs through the app. Our news feed is built on the same filing-native events.
A real example: QXO and TopBuild
QXO's $17B acquisition of TopBuild (QXO's announcement, filed as Exhibit 99.1) shows how many separate events one deal produces.
In the same stretch, Insighthread's feed carried five filing-sourced events for QXO:
- April 20: QXO Acquires TopBuild for $17B, from an EX-99.1 exhibit, tagged Mergers and Acquisitions.
- April 20: Jacobs Private Equity Voting Agreement, from a Schedule 13D/A, tagged Shareholder Activism.
- April 20: Bradley Jacobs Reports 35.9% Beneficial Ownership, from a Schedule 13D/A, tagged Minority Stakes Deals.
- April 15: QXO Closes $253.9M Private Placement, from a Form D, tagged Equity/Debt Offerings.
- April 1: QXO Completes Kodiak Acquisition for $2.25B, from an EX-99.1 exhibit, tagged Mergers and Acquisitions.
The headline deal is the one a release announces. The ownership update and the private placement are the kind of events that live in filings.
Each one links to its source document, so a developer can verify it without reading around.
When you need a wire feed, a filing feed, or both
Pick a wire feed if you need what companies say about themselves, including announcements that never reach the SEC, and you're comfortable reading narrative text.
Pick a filing-native feed if you need structured, verifiable events for US public companies, especially insider, institutional and ownership activity.
Many teams will want both. The wire shows how a company frames the news, and the filing shows what it was legally required to disclose.
The one limit to know: Insighthread covers US-listed public companies only, and only what appears in SEC filings.
If you're weighing the wires directly, we've written side-by-side pages for PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire. For a related question, see Is GlobeNewswire reliable?
