Looking for a Dow Jones Newswires Alternative? A Filing-Native News API
If you're searching for a Dow Jones Newswires API or an MT Newswires alternative, the first question is what you actually need the feed to do.
A licensed newsroom and a structured company-events feed are different products. This post covers where a filing-native news API fits, and where it doesn't.
Dow Jones Newswires and MT Newswires: what they are
Dow Jones Newswires and MT Newswires are professional newswire services. Journalists and editors write stories about companies and markets, and the service licenses those stories to terminals, platforms and institutions.
That gives you broad coverage, editorial judgment and narrative context. A newsroom can explain why a deal matters, or what a market move means.
We don't make claims about their pricing, licensing terms or speed here. For those, go to the providers directly.
Who needs a licensed newsroom, and who doesn't
If your users expect market commentary, macro coverage or a recognizable newsroom brand, a licensed newswire is the right tool.
Some platforms need something narrower. They want company events they can store, filter, trigger alerts on and show next to a source document, without a person reading and tagging each story.
For that, prose is the obstacle. Narrative articles need parsing before software can use them.
What a filing-native News API gives developers
Insighthread's News API generates news directly from SEC filings: 8-K, Form 4, Form 13F, Form D, S-1 and other filing types.
Each item is a structured event of about 50 to 60 words. It states facts only, with no opinion and no analyst commentary.
Every event carries one of 33 event types across 11 groups, such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Insider Trades, Institutional Decrease, Shareholder Activism, Dividends and Bankruptcy/Liquidation. That tagging means you filter by event, not by keyword.
Every item links to the filing it came from. Items are available in under 90 seconds from the filing timestamp.
The insider and institutional events are filtered to cut noise. A Form 4 becomes news only for open-market purchases or sales of directly held shares, and only when it's a single transaction of $500K or more, a cluster of buys by two or more insiders within five days, or one insider making three or more purchases in 30 days. Grants, option exercises, tax withholding, gifts and indirect holdings are left out. Form 13F items cover new positions, full exits, changes of 20% or more quarter over quarter, and positions of at least 0.5% of shares outstanding.
A worked example: QXO's $17B TopBuild deal
QXO's acquisition of TopBuild is a useful test, because one deal creates several distinct events.
In our own comparison of the same week, Dow Jones Newswires carried eight "Market Talk" articles on the deal. They were published five days after the SEC filing, with no source document attached, in narrative prose that needs manual parsing.
Insighthread produced five events over the same stretch, each linked to its filing:
- QXO Acquires TopBuild for $17B (EX-99.1), tagged Mergers and Acquisitions.
- Jacobs Private Equity Voting Agreement (Schedule 13D/A), tagged Shareholder Activism.
- Bradley Jacobs Reports 35.9% Beneficial Ownership (Schedule 13D/A), tagged Minority Stakes Deals.
- QXO Closes $253.9M Private Placement (Form D), tagged Equity/Debt Offerings.
- QXO Completes Kodiak Acquisition for $2.25B (EX-99.1), tagged Mergers and Acquisitions.
That is a single case, not a benchmark. It does show the difference in kind: commentary on the deal against the deal's own filings, broken into events.
Limits of a filing-native feed
Insighthread covers US-listed public companies, and only what appears in SEC filings. It does not cover rumors, market chatter, macro commentary or non-US issuers.
If your product needs those, a newswire is the better fit.
When to keep both
Many teams will use both. The newswire supplies context and narrative for the people reading it. The filing-native API supplies structured, verifiable events that software can act on.
